Pictured is the frontmatter of the magazine I picked up: “Poetry: A Magazine of Verse VOLUME XXXI”
For this archival research, I partnered with Agnes to read through this magazine. Some poems in this magazine that caught my eye were by Horace Gregory and Louise Bogan. Poems Agnes pointed out were by Agnes Lee and David O. Hamilton. Throughout the magazine, a theme we noticed was the topic of love. This is not unheard of in poetry, obviously. However, Agnes and I had different reactions to these as we discussed the poems. At first, she found them repetitive and somewhat tacky. Until we reread them and analyzed a bit more and we found deeper meanings behind the topics. Whether it was love being a burden or love being a prison, in the end, I think each poem brought their own individual tastes to the table.

These are works by two authors Louise Bogan and David O. Hamilton. Truthfully, I forgot to take pictures of the poems that really struck me. But this is an example of two poets and their differing styles. Both Bogan and Hamilton play with the margins, something experimental that could be found in the Contemporary Era. To me, Hamilton’s poems had a tone that felt a lot more cold. His language sounds melancholy and deserted. I think that’s what drew me to take pictures of this one.
Good work, Charlene. Did you recall Louise Bogan’s name from our English 245 class? She’s the poet Sonia Sanchez studied with at NYU!
Also, is this post supposed to count for Agnes as well?
Ohhhh I knew I saw it somewhere, thank you! And if it’s possible to count for us both, I would love that!
