I found more Robert McAlmon content! I’m still not sure why I find this man quite so fascinating, but I do, and I’m making it everyone’s problem. Seriously, I’ve started making so many jokes about the merits of the patriarchy I’m worried I might start to get irony poisoning, and I’m pretty sure the catalyst was reading this guy’s poem. Or maybe misogyny’s just been in the news a lot. Couldn’t tell ya! But the poem certainly didn’t help. It’s funny because when I first found the guy and was talking about him to other people, I made the comparison of him being something like an H. P. Lovecraft of Modernist poetry; talented writer, but an atrocious worldview. After some (limited) research, though, I had to correct myself because apparently he thought of himself as a pretty inclusive guy. Who’d a thought? And it’s something that’s very much corroborated here (as can be seen in his answer to question #3). Weirdly self-aware and makes the previous poetry I read of his even more confusing and interesting. Would’ve loved to pick his brain on how he could reconcile his principles with his worldview, but I think he’s probably a bit too dead for that now. 🙁
Oh, and also, this was found in The Little Review’s May 1929 issue.
