One thing that I found interesting when looking through the little magazines we have in archives was the blend of different art forms — most notably the visual art! We as a class have talked a lot about the literary movement of modernism that is happening around this time, and the way that it takes a lot of its influences from cubism! So I am curious to see whether or not this is reflected in any of the art found in these journals. I feel like the image I have included below does not have a basis in cubism, so where does it find it’s influences? What other artistic movements were around at this time and how do they influence/play off of the writing that is present? Are there reasons and themes that the editors for these magazines put them all together?
I also simply find something charming in having visual and written art right beside one another. It reminds me a lot of the student run literary magazines we have! And in many ways they serve the same purposes — to capture the artistic moment of a group of people in a certain time, and to preserve an element of this for the future to look analyze and the present to discover.
